Red Invasion Gown a.k.a Throne Room Gown

This is the first costume we see Queen Amidala wear in the Phantom Menace. She wears it during the conference call with the Nemoidians and at the start of the invasion of Naboo. Amidala is accompanied by handmaidens wearing the mustard yellow outfits.

Design:
"Perhaps one of the most complex costumes is the Queen's Throne Room Gown, which is illuminated by a series of lights around the hem. Work on the dress, which took almost eight weeks to complete, began with the manufacturing of an undergarment that resembled an upside-down ice cream cone. The shape of this undergarment was constructed using many narrow panels of canvas that were reinforced with rings of crinoline steel around the hem to keep the shape rigid and support the weight of the fabric, allowing it to skim the floor, creating a floating, gliding effect. Trisha considered velvet, but with some of the sections being cut on the cross, the reversal of the velvet pile would have been extremely obvious and ugly under film lighting. She chose instead a fine silk-satin cord, which was mounted on a more densely-woven silk prior to construction, and each panel (approximately twenty-five in the dress and fifteen in each sleeve) was self-piped. The collar, hanging center-front piece, and sleeves were edged and lined in a faux fur and decorated with gold metallic embroidery. The lights were in a vac-formed Perspex, color-washed with French enamel varnish. In keeping with the cultural and historical basis of many of the costumes, the dress was influenced by Chinese Imperial court styles."

Headdress:
"Episode I Throne Room Headdress with blade-shaped side panels of intricate gold work with vintage red lace overlay and Chinese-inspired centerpiece."
-Dressing a Galaxy

"Amidala draws upon Naboo's deeply traditional modes of royal dress and make-up to express the commitment she has to her role. Her extremely formal appearance in the palace throne room helps her project an unwaveringly professional image and warns others not to dismiss her abilities."
