Revenge of the Sith Plot Summary
As the Clone War nears its end, a huge spaceship battle rages over Coruscant. General Grievous, the evil head of the Separatist droid army has captured the Republic leader, Chancellor Palpatine, and is holding him hostage aboard his star ship. Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi infiltrate the vessel and confront Sith Lord Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku). The Jedi fight Tyranus and Obi-Wan is knocked unconscious. Anakin defeats Tyranus, slicing off his hands and literally bringing him to his knees. Urged on by the chancellor, Anakin beheads Tyranus with his lightsaber. But Anakin is deeply disturbed and appalled by his actions—a Jedi would never commit such an unnecessary and heinous act. Palpatine is freed and Obi-Wan regains consciousness, but the trio is quickly captured and taken to General Grievous on the bridge. The Jedi destroy his Magna Guards, but Grievous escapes. As Grievous’ heavily damaged spaceship crashes towards the planet, Anakin takes control and lands it safely. Yoda sends Obi-Wan to the Utapau system to find and capture General Grievous and the other separatists. At Darth Sidious’ command, Grievous is relocating the separatist leaders to the molten planet Mustafa.
During a brief reunion, Padme tells Anakin she’s pregnant. Although he says it’s wonderful, he’s deeply concerned about their situation and begins having nightmares that Padme dies in childbirth. Chancellor Palpatine has expanded his powers over the senate and extended his stay in office long after his term was to expire. At Palpatine’s insistence, Anakin is appointed to the Jedi Council as his representative. Anakin is angry when he is denied the rank of Jedi Master. Suspicious of the chancellor’s motives, the council agrees to Anakin’s appointment only because they want him to report on Chancellor Palpatine actions. The chancellor increases his influence over Anakin by telling him about a Sith Lord who had the power to prevent death. He tells Anakin that together they can learn this power and save Padme. Palpatine says he knows the Jedi Council wants Anakin to spy on him, and Anakin confirms they distrust him.
Sidious gives Order 66 to all of the clone troop commanders which states to kill all Jedi. Only Yoda and Obi-Wan survive. Darth Vader leads a team of Clone Troopers to the Jedi Temple and all Jedi die. Not long after, Sidious appoints himself Emperor and declares the Republic a Galactic Empire. Anakin is ordered by Sidious to go to the lava planet Mustafar to kill the Separatist leaders. Yoda goes to confront the newly appointed Emperor and they duel throughout the Senate Chamber. Yoda flees from the battle after realizing that he cannot defeat Sidious. Padmé arrives at Mustafar after Obi-Wan tells her that Anakin has turned to the dark side and Obi-Wan stows aboard her ship. Anakin and Padmé talk until Obi-Wan appears, leading Anakin/Vader to believe Padme has betrayed him. Vader chokes Padmé / Vader and Obi-Wan duel. Anakin loses both legs and one arm as he rolls down to a beach of scolding black rock. Obi-Wan watches in terror as his former apprentice bursts into flames. Obi-Wan takes off in Padmé's ship just before Sidious' shuttle arrives and he takes Anakin aboard. Padmé gives birth to Luke and Leia on an asteroid planet before she dies and tells Obi-Wan that there is still good in Anakin. Anakin receives the black suit and helmet of Darth Vader. Sidious lies to Vader and tells him that he (Vader) killed Padmé. Yoda and Obi-Wan decide to hide some place where the Emperor cannot sense them; Yoda tells Obi-Wan that Qui-Gon Jinn has found a way to achieve immortality (you know, the whole ghost form thing) and that Obi-Wan must train during his exile to achieve such a state. Bail Organa adopts Leia and takes her to Alderaan. Vader, the Emperor and Tarkin look out into space to watch the Death Star being built. Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine and delivers him to Owen and Beru.
