Wedding Dress

Padmé wears the wedding dress when her and Anakin get married secretly on Naboo at the end of the movie.

Design:
"George's vision of an unpretentious private ceremony at the lovers' Naboo lake retreat with only the holy man officiating and no guests (save C-3PO and R2-D2) called for a simple, beautiful gown in incredible fabric. Trisha and George had finalized on paper how it should look, but just couldn't find a suitable material. Eventually, Karen Thorn, their Australian buyer, happened upon an antique lace bedspread from the late Edwardian period (circa 1900). It was absolutly perfect, but beds were smaller then, so there wasn't nearly enough material to make the planned dress. George went into the costume department one Saturday morning and him and Trisha discussed options, taking turns draping the available fabric on the stand; as they both liked the bedspread so very much, they ended up adjusting the design to fit the available amount of fabric.

Utilizing the talents of Sandra Fullerton and her incredible embroidery facility in Sydney, they appliquéd with a manual satin stitch thr available embroidered sections from an antique lace bedsoread onto eleven silk tulle pattern sections that would eventually become the Wedding Ensemble. As the amount of vintage fabric available was limited, Sandra's team made over 300 yards of French-knit braid for Cornely scrollwork, to combine and meld the panels. The finished dress was then studded with pearls. It has a maltese lace veil with headdress made from Edwardian wax flowers and beaded pearls. Small pearls are sprinlled over the rest of the veil."

When they were shooting the wedding in Italy, the production supervisor Guido Cerasuolo, upon seeing the dress, exclaimed, 'Ah, Italian lace!' He went on to explain that it was exactly like the fabrics made by the old ladies on the island of Burano. It's possible that the material originated in Italy, emigrated to Australia, and returned, a century later, to the shores of Lake Como.
